Mopped Stage Productions

Where scholarships enters the stage

Happy Anniversary!

That’s right: one year ago today, Philip and Casey first sat down to start mapping out what a shared producing venture could look like.

It was a cold Saturday at Five Flies Coffee Shop in Washington Heights. We came in with the vague idea that theatre scholars and artists should work more closely together. We had not even held auditions yet for our first production, an evening of two Susan Glaspell plays we called Women on Trial, and didn’t know exactly what we wanted this thing to be. By the time we left that afternoon, we had a draft of a mission statement, a short list of colleagues we thought might be interested in making some theatre, and a shared inbox.

In the year since, Mopped Stage has:

  • put up three staged readings, including two premieres
  • commissioned our first English-language translation
  • worked with five scholars and students without a previous professional credit

It’s been an absolute thrill to watch this idea grow, with two more readings on deck and a new life for Hrotsvitha Hremixes in the works.

Keep an eye out for some big announcements in the next few weeks! We’ll see you at the theatre soon.
